ALBANY, NY (WRGB)---State leaders are warning about a kind of insect that carries another serious illness.
It's called the "Lone Star Tick," and it can actually make you allergic to meat.
The tick gets its name from the white splotch on its back.
And it all has to do with a sugar in the tick's saliva, and it also just so happens that that sugar is found in most meats.
The problem is, once the "Lone Star Tick" bites, the human body sees that sugar as a foreign substance.
So, this means the next time that person eats a steak , three to eighthours later they have an allergic reaction that could cause rashes, throat swelling and in severe cases, death.
Sen. Chuck Schumer, who is trying to push through tick prevention legislation fears it's only a matter of time before we see it.
"It's spreading and its on Long Island now. I don't think there have been any cases here, but there will be. No one knew anything about this a few years ago and now there are 300 to 400 people who can't eat meat," said Sen. Schumer.
The Department of Health says only two "Lone Star Ticks" have been found in the Capital Region in the last 15 years.
